How to Hack Your Own Brain

Welcome, lovely readers, to the whimsical world of "Meno-Mirth Michaela"! If you've ever felt like life is a rollercoaster—complete with loop-de-loops, unexpected drops, and the occasional scream—then you've come to the right place. Today, we’re going to dive into the delightful and slightly bonkers world of brain chemistry. Buckle up, because we’re about to hack our own brains with a blend of science, humour, and a dash of relatable analogies, all with a special nod to those of us navigating the menopause.

The Reward Chemical

Imagine dopamine as your brain’s personal cheerleader. This nifty little chemical gets all pom-poms and high kicks whenever you complete a task or celebrate a small win. Think of it like this: every time you tick off an item from your to-do list, it's like your brain is throwing you a mini-parade. And trust me, during menopause, you need all the parades you can get.

Want to boost your dopamine?

Completing a Task: Even if it’s just making your bed. Instant dopamine rush! Think of it as starting the day with a mini-Olympics gold medal.

Eating Food: Yes, that slice of cake does more than just taste good. It’s a slice of happiness and who’s going to argue with that? (In Moderation)

Celebrating Little Wins: Did you find a matching pair of socks? Throw a party! Seriously, it’s a miracle.

Self-Care Activities: Pamper yourself; you deserve it. Face masks, bubble baths, and the latest episode of your favourite show. Bliss!

The Love Hormone

Oxytocin is the warm, fuzzy blanket of the hormone world. It's what makes you feel all gooey inside when you cuddle a baby or play with a dog. Oxytocin is like a big, warm hug for your brain, which is especially comforting when hot flashes make you feel like a human volcano.

To get your oxytocin fix, try:

Playing with a Baby or Dog:

Or a baby dog, for maximum effect. Just don’t steal one from the park. People frown upon that.

Giving a Compliment:

Tell someone they look fabulous today. Spread the love and feel the love in return.

Holding Hands:

Don’t underestimate the power of a simple touch. Even if it’s with your favourite mug.

Hugging Family:

Group hug, anyone? Or just tackle-hug your partner until they agree.

The Mood Stabiliser

Picture serotonin as your brain’s personal life coach, keeping everything in balance and ensuring you don’t have a meltdown over a spilt cup of tea. During menopause, serotonin is like that friend who always knows what to say to calm you down when you're ready to turn into the Hulk.

Boost your serotonin with:

Praying Or meditating, if that’s more your style. Or just staring blankly at a wall in silent contemplation. It counts.

Walking in Nature

Embrace your inner David Attenborough. Or just take a stroll to the nearest coffee shop; nature is anywhere with a potted plant.

Running: Or jogging, or brisk walking—whatever gets you moving. Bonus points for chasing after the ice cream van.

Sun Exposure: Safely, of course. Think sunlit strolls, not sunburnt lobster. SPF is your friend.

- **Cycling and Swimming**: Get those endorphins pumping. Or just float in the pool pretending to be a mermaid. It works.

The Sleep Hormone

Melatonin is your internal sandman, coaxing you gently into the land of nod. When melatonin’s working its magic, you’re off to dreamland without a hitch. Sleep can be elusive during menopause, but there are ways to help melatonin do its job.

Encourage melatonin production

Dimming Your Lights at Night Pretend you’re setting the mood, but for sleep. Or for a spooky story time; your choice.

Reducing Screen Time: Yes, that means putting your phone down. Tough love, folks. You can do it!

Sun Exposure: Again, but this time to regulate your sleep cycle. Get outside and soak up that daylight!

Eating Right: A balanced diet can do wonders for your sleep.

Relaxing Activities: Think reading, gentle yoga, or a warm bath. Or listening to whale sounds. Whatever floats your boat.

Embrace the Madness

Life is unpredictable, chaotic, and often completely bonkers. But by understanding these little brain hacks, you can ride the ups and downs with a bit more grace and a lot more humour. After all, if you can’t laugh at the craziness, what’s the point?

As I navigate the ups and downs of menopause, I’ve found that celebrating small victories, hugging my loved ones, taking sunny strolls, and winding down with a good book can make all the difference. And always, always, keep a sense of humour.
