Menopause Navigating with Diversity and Inclusion

Welcome, to the colourful and chaotic world of menopause, where hot flashes and mood swings reign supreme, and navigating the emotional rollercoaster requires a touch of humour, a splash of diversity, and a whole lot of grace. But fear not, because we're about to embark on a journey that's not only about surviving menopause but also embracing diversity and inclusion along the way. So, buckle up!

Imagine this: you're cruising through life, minding your own business, when suddenly, out of nowhere, your body decides to throw a tantrum worthy of a toddler in a sweet shop.

Hot flashes? ✅️.

Mood swings? Double ✅️✅️.

It's like your hormones are hosting their own chaotic carnival, and you're stuck on the rollercoaster ride without a map.

But fear not, for I come bearing the secrets to surviving this tumultuous terrain with grace, humour, and a splash of diversity.

Dr. Atina Manvelian is serving up some serious wisdom with her underrated communication skills for healthy relationships.

So I have infused these tips into our journey through menopause?

Identifying & expressing deeper emotions to clarify underlying issues.

Think of it like peeling an onion – you gotta get past those outer layers of "I'm fine" to uncover the juicy, tear-inducing truths hiding within.

By embracing each other's unique perspectives and sharing our innermost feelings openly, we can peel back the layers of confusion and uncover the truths hidden within.

Actively listening to truly understand (vs. respond)

Listening without interrupting is like trying to hold back an incontinence sneeze – it's tough, but oh-so-rewarding when you finally let it out (in this case, understanding, not the pee and snot).

Understand that listening is more than just hearing words it's about empathising with each other's experiences. Like a symphony of voices harmonising, we listen without interrupting, allowing everyone's story to be heard and valued.

Exploring emotions by asking open-ended questions

Our journey through menopause is like a safari through the jungle of feelings, where every emotion is a wild creature waiting to be discovered.

By asking open-ended questions, we navigate this emotional terrain together, armed with curiosity and compassion.

Asking questions to understand your partner/ friends behaviour instead of making assumptions

Assuming makes an ass out of you and me, so let's leave the donkey business to the petting zoo, shall we?

Diversity teaches us that assumptions can lead to misunderstandings. Instead, embrace curiosity and ask questions to understand each other's behaviour, creating deeper connections and mutual respect.

Listening for the positive need behind anger/criticism

It's like trying to find the silver lining in a thunderstorm – it may be hidden behind dark clouds, but it's there, waiting to be discovered.

Like skilled detectives, we need to listen beyond the surface of anger and criticism, searching for the positive need hidden within.

In our diverse tapestry of emotions, every expression is a clue leading us closer to understanding and resolution.

Clarifying expectations

Because expecting your partner/friends to read your mind is like expecting your cat to take the bins out or put away the washing – it's just not gonna happen, no matter how much you stare at them.

Diversity teaches us that clarity is key to successful communication. By clarifying our expectations openly and honestly, we avoid misunderstandings and cultivate trust within our diverse relationships.

Communicating when overwhelmed instead of shutting down or lashing out

It's like trying to juggle flaming torches – sure, it's impressive if you can pull it off, but most of us would rather not risk setting the house on fire.

In our diverse community, we recognise the importance of communication, even when emotions run high.

Instead of shutting down or lashing out, we need to express ourselves respectfully, knowing that our diverse experiences enrich our understanding of each other.

Being able to give & accept feedback

Think of it as a dance – sometimes you lead, sometimes you follow, but either way, you're moving together in harmony (and hopefully not stepping on each other's toes).

Like skilled dancers, we move gracefully through the dance of giving and accepting feedback. In our diverse interactions, feedback is a gift that helps us grow and evolve, strengthening our relationships and deepening our connections.

Validating without agreeing.

It's like being a judge on a reality TV show – you may not always agree with the contestants' choices, but you can still appreciate their efforts and offer constructive criticism (preferably without the dramatic music).

In our diverse world, validation does not always mean agreement. We celebrate our differences and validate each other's experiences, even when we may not see eye to eye. Like judges in a talent show, we appreciate the unique contributions of each individual, creating a more inclusive and understanding community.

So there you have it, Dr. Manvelian's tips for better communication, served up with a side of humour, diversity, and a sprinkle of metaphorical magic.

Go forth and communicate like the graceful, emotionally evolved beings you are! And as we navigate menopause and beyond, let's remember to embrace diversity, celebrate our differences, and create a world where everyone feels included, valued, and appreciated.
